AMERICANS WEARING SOCCER JERSEYS and other examples of MEMORABILIA IN PUBLIC
AMERICAN CELEBRITY WEARING A SOCCER JERSEY of the WEEK
Photo subject: Beautiful, accomplished sports groupie whose absurd amount of Twitter followers exaggerate her celebrity
Where to find her: On the arm of a mediocre pitcher; In syndication; Promoting a noble cause in a print advertisement or on a talkshow; Tweeting anywhere
Team: Internazionale or, as they are more commonly called in the US and most of the world, Inter Milan. Inter has won three Champions League titles, most recently in 2010 over Bayern Munich. The name Internazionale is apt, as the club features a powerful cosmopolitan lineup that includes Uruguayan forward Diego Forlán, Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder, Romanian defender Christian Chivu, Japanese defender Yuto Nagatomo, Italian midfielder Thiago Motta, Nigerian midfielder Joel Obi and Brazilian goalkeeper Júlio César.
American connection(s): In July 2009, I was driving to my apartment in Allston, MA from my job in Cambridge when police stopped me in front of Harvard Stadium. A moment later, a parade of golf carts crossed the road, each carrying one or two Inter Milan players. The future Champions League champs were training at the stadium to prepare for a friendly against cross-city rival AC Milan at Gillette Stadium.
Unfortunately, I have never been as close to Alyssa Milano as I have to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Patrick Vieira, Diego Milito, et. al. Milano is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for the United States and a huge fan of America’s Pastime. She has not only dated at least four major leaguers but has done special reporting during TBS’s playoff coverage, blogged on MLB.com and started a line of baseball team apparel for women.
